Developmental Editing Services
Editing is a complex variety of experiences. To have a relationship with an editor that fits you best, it is vital to understand the different options and choose the service to best help your project soar.

Manuscript Evaluation
The manuscript evaluation for writers is a good option if your manuscript is fairly complete and you are looking for minimal big-picture analysis. Often a manuscript evaluation will help you with small tweaks before publishing. It can also help a writer who is earlier in the process address more broad challenges with the manuscript editing before returning to a more in-depth edit. A manuscript evaluation is a light version of a developmental edit, and will identify many of the same problems, but won't provide solutions.
Developmental Edit
Developmental editing services are a comprehensive look at the craft elements of a manuscript. It is sometimes referred to as a substantive or content edit. The developmental edit will look at elements such as plot, characterization, POV, dialogue, worldbuilding, setting, voice, pacing, and genre. This type of edit is an extensive process requiring editor/writer collaboration and takes 4-6 weeks. This service includes:
-
A close read of the manuscript with comments
-
A book map by chapter to identify problem areas
-
A detailed editorial letter, including strengths and weaknesses and potential resources to help with revisions

Line Edit
A line edit involves a very close read of the manuscript and includes extensive in-line comments that focus on elements of language, flow, consistency, and voice. While grammar is addressed, this service is not a copy edit, so spelling, punctuation, and grammar are not the focus. This type of service is all about polishing your sentences so they work hard for your story and your voice shines through. Flow and style are the foundation of this service.
