ABOUT BLACKBIRD EDITING
Kristen Kaiser, MA, MPH
Owner/Editor
My name is Kristen, and I am thrilled you're here. My passion for reading and writing has been lifelong. It shapes how I move through the world, relate to the people I love and those I encounter, and spend time in my imagination. Early in my career I spent several years writing marketing content and grant proposals for design firms while working on my Masters in Literature. My dream was to get my PhD and teach, but life had other plans for me. My husband and I had triplets who were neurodivergent, and our life became something else entirely. Retraining in public health and neurodevelopmental disabilities, I engaged in research and teaching in the field of disabilities, specializing in autism.
While I still feel passionate about supporting families and autistic individuals, I am circling back to my love of story. Now that my amazing children are young adults, I have reimagined my own life and immersed myself in the writing community, both editing colleagues' projects and working on my own creative writing projects, including creative non-fiction, poetry, and a debut novel. My goal with Blackbird Editing is to provide other writers with community, guidance, and high-quality online editing services tailored to individual needs. The world needs YOUR unique voice, and I can help you nurture your voice, hone your craft, and let your creation fly.

Kristen Kaiser took my book and made it great. As an editor, she gave specific and instrumental feedback about content - interiority of voice, the build-up of creative tension and storyline. She identified opportunities to add dimension through detail and pacing. She meticulously tracked my scenes to ensure that readers would never abandon my book because they were confused or lost. Most importantly to me as a writer, she honored my voice and made clever suggestions to revise my manuscript while maintaining its integrity. That was all on her first review. On her second review, Kristen identified the flaws in the writing especially in tense and structure. But Kristen was more than an editor, she was a coach. She made me a better writer. I deleted two chapters (hard for a writer) because Kristen knew that while they were good stories, they didn’t fit the book. She even had suggestions to make sure my language and nuance was free from implicit bias. Kristen will edit my second book and every book after. She’s that good.
